Opus 173

St. John's Cathedral
Hong Kong

Created: In progress

Felix Yeung, Director of Music at St John’s Anglican Cathedral made initial inquiries about an organ in 2016 coinciding with the installation of our Opus 149 at the Tang Shiu Kin Secondary School Chapel. Ever since, Mr. Yeung’s dream of an outstanding organ to lead the Anglican liturgy and support his large music program has continued to evolve. Mr. Yeung initiated our latest discussions considering placement and specification of a new instrument during the installation of Fisk Opus 158 at Hong Kong Baptist University. Appreciation of the pipe organ and its literature continues to expand in Hong Kong, especially with the leadership and support of Elizabeth Wong and the Hong Kong Chapter of the American Guild of Organists.

Located on Hong Kong Island, the Gothic Revival styled St John’s Cathedral was consecrated in 1849, however it wasn’t until 1860 that a 25 stop organ arrived from England. This was replaced with a Walker organ in 1887 with a notable rebuild by W.C. Blackett commencing in 1925. By 1948 the organ was deemed too costly to repair and was removed. Since this time, electronic organs have been leading worship. The Music program plays a vital role in the cathedral with a 30 voice choir leading each Sunday. Besides the main cathedral choir, there are six other choirs for services in Mandarin, Pilipino and Cantonese, the Children & Family service, and the monthly Choral Mattins and semimonthly Choral Evensong.

Organs at C.B Fisk are always conceived through collaboration with the organist and the advising committee. Through this collaboration a vision for a new instrument grows from design to reality. At St. John’s we have the unique opportunity to create an instrument that is visually inspired by its surroundings in the same location that the 1887 Walker organ presided, currently the St. Michael’s Chapel. Tonally, being Fisk at heart, it will draw on our experience building other recent large cathedral and concert hall style instruments notably in Raleigh NC, Nashville TN, Harvard University MA and Costa Mesa CA. Due for delivery in 2029, the 3 Manual 49 stop organ will not only be an exciting project for our workshop but add to the three other Fisk instruments in the greater Hong Kong area leaving a lasting legacy for generations of organists and musicians and their audiences.
